Making the Connection: Animal-Based Food Systems and Pandemics

This webinar provides a sneak preview of ProVeg’s upcoming “Food & Pandemics” report which explores the crucial connection between the current COVID-19 crisis and the global animal-based food system highlighting how our food choices help to create a recipe for future zoonotic pandemics – consisting of three mutually reinforcing ingredients. You will learn about: (1) Three human food-system related activities increasing pandemic risks – including the destruction of ecosystems and the loss of biodiversity (profoundly driven by animal agriculture); the use of wild animals for food; and the use of domesticated animals for food in high-density, intensified animal agriculture – resulting in ideal conditions for viral mutation, spread, and spillover to humans. (2) Food-related and other factors increasing the impact of pandemics – including antimicrobial resistance (AMR), communicable food-borne diseases, and non-communicable diet-related diseases (3) Insights about how to communicate about the connection and its controversies.

Presented by Jens Tuider, International Director and Special Advisor to the CEO at ProVeg International and Limbania Aliaga, Research and Science Team Member at ProVeg International,
